SUMMARY:Canada’s Role in the Future of Food
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nCanada is a leading food-producing nation\, and support
 s a robust innovation environment that supports agrifood technology develo
 pment from field to table. Yet in a time of climate disruption\, our food 
 security is far from secured. In this talk I will explore emerging areas o
 f agrifood technology and policy that will shape the future of food in Can
 ada and abroad\, including controlled environment agriculture\, precision 
 fermentation\, cellular agriculture\, and genomics. Policy\, however\, rem
 ains a stumbling block for Canada\, and I will discuss how proper climate 
 change policy and innovation policy can unlock the potential for made in C
 anada innovation. Both technology and policy innovation are critical to bu
 ild just and resilient food systems that will feed Canadians and the world
  nutritious\, affordable food.\n\n\n\nLenore Newman\n\n\n\n\nLenore is the
  Director of the Food and Agriculture Institute at the University of the F
 raser Valley where she holds a full professorship and research chair in fo
 od and agriculture innovation. Lenore is a past Canada Research Chair in F
 ood Security and the Environment and an emeritus member of the Royal Socie
 ty of Canada's New College. Lenore consults with industry in the areas of 
 controlled environment agriculture\, alternative proteins\, and rare fruit
  and vegetables. She is the author of Speaking in Cod Tongues and the aw
 ard-winning Lost Feast\, and her third book\, Dinner on Mars\, coauthore
 d with Dr. Evan Fraser\, was published in 2022. Dr. Newman sat on the BC P
 remier's Food Security Task Force\, and she holds a BSc in Physics from th
 e University of British Columbia\, and a PhD in Environmental Studies from
