The Concordia Food Coalition has spent a decade+ building the campus food movement — helped launch projects like The Hive, Hydroflora, and the weekly Farmers’ Market, and funneling over $125, 000 in support to student-led food initiatives.
Thousands of students have eaten, learned, and organized through programs we’ve helped grow. But sustaining that work — and expanding it — takes steady resources. This fee levy increase keeps those lifelines strong and fuels the next generation of student-led food justice at Concordia.
We’ve been operating at $0.16 per credit while delivering double the programming since we started. Help us secure the future of the campus food movement!
Food Insecurity On Campus – Why is it SYSTEMIC?
Distribution failure, not scarcity, is the real problem
How can the CFC help with food insecurity?
- 50%+ of food is wasted/lost Canada-wide
- 60%+ Concordia students experience food insecurity
- Increasing grocery costs create decreasing accessibility of healthy, whole foods.
The Concordia Food Coalition has:
- Funded & supported over 25 campus food projects since 2013
- Over $125,000 in financial support was offered to food groups
- Incubated and supported key food groups such as the Hive Cafe and Hive Free Meals, Coop CultivAction, The Farmers Market, Reggies Bar and Resto, and sooo many more!
What will we do with our fee levy increase?
Market
Expand the market – more vendors, supporting new student vendors, MAPAQ kitchen training resources for students starting food projects. Double the market dollars from $2000 to $4000 to offer more free fresh veg and more at our weekly campus market.
Campus Food System Support
Continue to build a localized, resilient food system by investing in and supporting student-led projects: More funding for student food projects – kitchens, gardens, media, and more.

FAQ
How much are you asking to increase?
Currently at 16 cents per credit, the CFC is ready to expand our programs to support food insecurity programs with a 16-cent increase. We are ready to expand from the baseline, using grants to support our budget, but now we`ll expand again steadily and responsibly, having showcased our track record of impact and financial responsibility.
Can I opt out?
Yes, anyone can opt out of any fee levy group during the opt-out periods, which are announced each semester. Opting out can be done online, but we recommend to research the services offered to the student body before defunding any campus fee levy groups.
Who oversees the budget?
The annual budget is overseen by our General Coordinator, the Finance Committee, our Board of Directors and is audited annually by an external office. The budget is presented at our Annual General meeting each January, which all student members are invited to attend.
What if I vote no?
The CFC’s presence on campus as an interconnective tissue helps strengthen the campus food community working to reduce food insecurity. Without this increase, Concordia’s food revolution movement slows down. The CFC will not be able to increase our programs, such as the Market Dollars free food program.

Food Justice: A movement and set of principles that sees access to healthy, affordable, culturally-appropriate food as a human right, and seeks to dismantle structural barriers (such as race, class, and geography) that prevent equitable participation in the food system.
